There’s no record of why Clement C. Moore named the reindeer as he did in his 1823 poem “A Visit From Saint Nicholas” (aka: “Twas the Night Before Christmas”), but his selection of eight reindeer has stuck for nearly two hundred years. And today our family began the journey of celebrating one of Santa’s reindeer each year for our Christmas festivities. Given that there’s admittedly not much to go on with “Vixen” besides the fact that it represents 1) a female fox, 2) a shrewish ill-tempered woman, or 3) a sexually attractive woman, it seemed best to start with that one and get it out of the way before we had to explain too much to the kids 🙂 So, creativity had to rein(deer) supreme with this one with a lot of foxes and a lot of rhymes.

Ben donned some fox ears for his daily run (ie: "Fox Trot"), Bekah got a “Vixen” T-shirt, and the twins received cute felt fox ornaments and a “The Christmas Fox” bedtime story. We read several of Bill Amend’s holiday-themed FoxTrot comics. And we watched a few videos about Christmas-related activities connected to the White House Christmas festivities of President NIXON, VIXEN Lights’ automated Christmas displays software, the singer Colton DIXON's holiday songs, as well as SNL’s holiday sketches of FOX News.

But the highlight of the evening was our annual Christmas dance party. This year’s theme was “Vixen’s Festive Foxtrot” where Ben and I actually learned how to dance the foxtrot. We set out an “All the FIXINGS” Crostini Bar with numerous options for breads, meats, cheeses, and spreads. Dessert was a Red Velvet Jar Cake that incorporated cake and pudding MIXES. And we also poured up some Vixen Moscato and a Vixen Cocktail.
